A tendency toward depression is something you live with, not something you beat. Kudos to Sari for telling the truth and living fruitfully as a writer and editorial meaning-maker.

I enjoyed Sari’s share of personal struggles. She is a person of humility and transparency. Rare nowadays.

Great interview, there's also an inherent risk of making the focus being how to "manage and regulate emotions" — in my experience there's something of a 'self-regulation paradox' (sharing a brief story below for context)

A few years back, I fell into a trap (that I also see in many students) along the way of cultivating nervous system mastery. Initially, when someone discovers bottom-up protocols (4-4-8 breathing, Voo-Hum etc.) it’s a total game-changer.

Instantly, the moments of intense anxiousness, fear, and overwhelm can be effectively managed. In the short term, life improves tremendously, and you’re able to function again in almost all situations.

However, this is where it’s easy to get stuck. If every time that you feel a sticky emotion, you just self-regulate it away without feeling it — you are still adding to the backlog of emotional debt.

This is where the paradox comes in. It’s crucial that you feel safe and grounded enough in the moment (which often requires some level of self-regulation or co-regulation with another) – but then, at some point, you inevitably need to feel the thing.

There’s no way around it. All emotions must eventually be welcomed in with open arms.

Anxiety, why hello there.

Grief, hello, old friend.

Shame, it’s lovely to see you again.

You’re welcome to resist this as much as you like but spoiler alert, it doesn't end well. Instead, if you begin with even an inkling of curiosity toward the emotional charge — as opposed to animosity and follow that, your life may radically change for the better.

I think I need to get Apple TV+ again. Seems like they have gotten so much new great stuff to watch. And still need to watch last season of See. Will remember the show Sari mention 😊
